Robert S. Katz, MD is one of the foremost rheumatologists in Chicago, recognized as one of Chicago Magazine’s ‘Best Doctors’ every year since the list was created in 1998. He has been cited as among the top 1% of rheumatologists nationally by US News & World Report and has received the highest honor from the American College of Rheumatology: Master of the American College of Rheumatology.
In addition to seeing patients in his offices at Rush University Medical Center and Northwestern Medicine, Dr. Katz is a long-time Professor of Medicine at Rush Medical College and an Attending Physician at Northwestern Medicine. He has served as the Joan and Paul Rubschlager Chair for Arthritis Research, Rush University Medical Center
With an early passion for becoming a physician, Dr. Katz received his bachelor’s degree at Columbia University, New York and his medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical School, Baltimore. He completed his medical internship and residency at Barnes Hospital, Washington University Medical Center, St. Louis, and his fellowship in rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.
Board-certified in both rheumatology and internal medicine, Dr. Katz is well known for his bedside manner and commitment to research.
Regularly sought out for his expertise in rheumatology, Dr. Katz brought together a group of researchers to change the criteria for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia which have been accepted by the American College of Rheumatology. Additionally, he has published more than 450 original book chapters, papers, and abstracts on a variety of diseases from the mid 1980’s to today. He was involved in research for new drugs to treat rheumatoid arthritis, including the first successful trial of a biologic medicine–Enbrel. He has also participated in many clinical trials to achieve approval for other drugs accepted by the FDA over the last 50 years. He continues to participate in active research to discover the causes and treatment of a variety of diseases.
Making community service a priority, Dr. Katz has been involved with the following organizations: Arthritis Foundation, Northern Illinois Chapter Chairman and Member, Board of Directors; Lupus Foundation of America, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board; Chairman, Board of Directors; Lupus Society of Illinois; Rheumatology Consultant, U.S. Health and Human Services Agency.
He formerly served as Medical Reporter, CBS2 Chicago, and Medical Editor, Chicago Sun Times.
Dr. Katz is pleased to be in practice with his daughter Alexandra Katz Small, MD and her husband, Ben Small, MD, both board-certified rheumatologists. He is married to wife Carlen and enjoys spending time with his 11 grandchildren. Besides spending time with family, he enjoys traveling.
