I remember when almost no one knew what lupus was and many publications described the illness as “fatal.” Now we know that lupus can be controlled and many cases are diagnosed on a regular basis.
The research generated over the last 50 years is partly due to lupus awareness. The investigators who put their time and energy into trying to find better treatment for lupus are motivated in part by the outgrowth of lupus awareness. In 2010, the first drug approved for lupus, Benlysta, in over 50 years became available. Several other biologic medications are now being tested for lupus. Read more.
